Portuguese Rugby League Association (PRLA)
The Portuguese Rugby League Association (PRLA) was established to provide rugby league players, with a Portuguese background, the opportunity to represent Portugal in international rugby league.
Based in Marrickville, in Sydney’s inner western suburbs, the PRLA is responsible for the promotion and development of rugby league in the Portuguese communities. The PRLA has contacts and affiliations with the rugby union in Portugal, other Portuguese communities in France and South Africa.
Our main objective is to establish a base and have rugby league played on an annual basis in Portugal.
Portugal’s first rugby league match was played on October 8, 2005, against Fiji A in Sydney, Australia.
The playing schedule is two or three sevens tournaments in January and February followed by a 13 a-side International match in October.
In Australia, the PRLA is affiliated with the Australian Rugby League (ARL) and the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL). All matches and tournaments are sanctioned by at least one of the governing bodies.
The PRLA is also a non active member of the Rugby League International Federation (RLIF) and the Rugby League European Federation (RLEF). The status of our membership will switch to active members when we kick-off rugby league in Portugal.
We will compete in the World Cup qualifiers in the European Nations Cup division.
The PRLA is working hard in attempt to establish a rugby league tournament in Portugal in 2009, prior to competing in the Italian Nine’s tournament in Italy.
